Belting, Hans (born 1935)

Biographical history

A German art historian and a theorist of medieval and Renaissance art. He was a Visiting Fellow at Dumbarton Oaks in 1959-1960, 1960-1961, 1969-1970, and 1972-1973, as well as a Senior Fellow in 1984-1985. Belting also received a Dumbarton Oaks project grant to research pre-14th century Byzantine icons and inspect icons in Greece and Italy between 1985 and 1987.

The department first received materials in this collection in 2002 from Hans Belting.

Scope and content

The majority of this collection consists of photographs of Palaeologan manuscript illumination, which were published by Hans Belting. It also consists of research notes, correspondence, and photographs of other Late Byzantine manuscripts. A majority of the notes and correspondence are in German. There is also an Addendum (see Notes field).

This collection consists of two series. Series I represents more extensive research by Hans Belting, including significant documentation accompanied by photographs of particular manuscripts. Series 2 is a less processed collection of photographs with occasional notes.
