Demus, Otto (1902-1990)

Biographical history

Born in Austria, Demus was a Byzantine art historian and a scholar of the Church of San Marco in Venice, Italy. He received his doctorate from the University of Vienna. At Dumbarton Oaks, he served as a Visiting Scholar in 1949, 1953, 1958, 1960, 1965, 1973–1979, and 1981. In 1973, Dumbarton Oaks provided support for Demus for his research project at San Marco, which resulted in the two-volume publication Mosaics of San Marco in Venice (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1984).

Biographical history

Austrian photographer and founder of the firm Foto Ritter in Vienna. Ritter created the color transparencies and slides for the North Adriatic project co-directed by Irina Andreescu and Otto Demus (1975-1979).

Content and structure area

Scope and content

This collection includes comprehensive research and conservation materials of mosaics in the North Adriatic area, a project co-sponsored by Dumbarton Oaks. Sites include Italy: Venice, San Marco; Torcello, Cathedral; Trieste, San Giusto; Murano, San Cipriano/San Donato; Ravenna, Basilica Ursiana; Greece: monasteries of Daphni and Hosios Loukas, different churches in Arta, Kastoria, and Thessaloniki; and Turkey: Istanbul, Hagia Sophia.

Dr. Irina Andreescu acted as fieldwork director and directed the photographic campaign that dates from 1975 through 1979. Photographer Ekkehard Ritter made black and white photographs, color transparencies and slides. Dr. Andreescu also made some of the 35 mm slides. Dr. Andreescu's research materials include bibliographical references, notes, sketches, and tracings.
