Biographical history

Amateur scholar and collector of Byzantine art. Collaborated with Royall Tyler on books and articles, including Byzantine Art (London: E. Benn, 1926) and L’art byzantin (Paris: Librairie de France, 1932-1934).

Immediate source of acquisition or transfer

This collection was transferred to the Byzantine Photograph and Fieldwork Archives in 1995 from the basement of the Fellows Building.

Scope and content

Peirce’s papers consist almost entirely of photographs, newspaper and magazine clippings, and drawings. This collection of research materials reflects his broad interest in Early Christian and Middle Byzantine art. The majority of the collection are photographs of manuscripts, textiles, sculpture, and other media. Numerous notes and drawings were made directly on photographs.
