Byzantinist, philologist, and historian. Ševčenko extensively photographed Byzantine written culture mostly in the form of manuscripts and inscriptions. He participated in the Princeton-Michigan-Alexandria expedition to Mount Sinai in 1963, where he photographed and studied the manuscripts and inscriptions at Saint Catherine's Monastery.
