Scope and content
Contains photographs taken by Robert Van Nice and others. Series 3 is divided into six (6) subseries arranged by format. The vast majority of photographs are of Hagia Sophia, but some photographs collected by Van Nice depict other Byzantine structures such as Kalenderhane Camii, Hagia Eirene, Bodrum Camii, and others. Other photographers represented include Yavuz Birtürk (fieldwork assistant), Fred Anderegg (photographer during an expedition to Mount Sinai), Rowland J. Mainstone, and Tony Marshall, among others.
Many of the photographs are arranged using a system of acronyms developed by Van Nice, and are also grouped by the size of the print. Photographs that are not arranged by acronym are often general exterior shots of Hagia Sophia, or are images from sources other than Van Nice and his associates.
