History

Hans Henning von der Osten was a German Near Eastern archaeologist and professor. He was born October 31, 1899 in Potsdam, Germany and died June 30, 1960 in Uppsala, Sweden. He studied archaeology, ancient Near Eastern studies and ancient history at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Berlin. His teachers included Eduard Meyer and Friedrich Delitzsch. In 1922, he moved to the United States to continue his studies, first in New York and then in Chicago.

In 1927 he was head of the Anatolian expedition organized by the University of Chicago’s Oriental Institute. He taught at the University of Ankara from 1936 to 1939. It was during this period that Dr. Von der Osten visited the excavations that Professors Kirsopp and Silva Lake undertook at Lake Van. The professor both advised the Lakes on how to approach their dig to yield stratified evidence of pottery and solicited their cooperation in a government-funded archaeological survey of the plain of Chalderon (see Reports #4-6). In Lakes’ report on the visit, the Lakes describe Von der Osten as having “probably a better knowledge of Anatolia and especially of Anatolian pottery than any other living man” (Report #4).

In 1951 he began teaching at the Swedish University of Uppsala. In 1960 he was elected director of the Department of Tehran at the German Archaeological Institute, but died before assuming the position. He passed on June 30, 1960.
