Biographical history

Architectural historian and Byzantinist who attended Princeton University in the 1920s. In the 1930s he led groups excavating the ruins of the nine-century Church of St. Martin at Angers, France. He was a professor at Princeton until 1941, when he was appointed chairman of the art history department at Michigan. In 1956, he directed an expeditionary trip to St. Catherine's Monastery at Mt. Sinai, convincing the University of Michigan, Princeton, and the University of Alexandria to mount a combined documentation of the buildings and objects there, a project which continued into the 1960s, and which Robert Van Nice was assisted with. Forsyth retired in 1972.
