Scope and content

Photographs depict the Byzantine Institute’s inaugural fieldwork project, an expedition led by Thomas Whittemore to Egypt in 1930, to conduct studies of wall paintings at the Coptic Monasteries of Saint Anthony and Saint Paul near the Red Sea. The team included the architect Oliver Barker, the painter Vladimir Netchetailov, the photographer Kazazian, and the epigrapher Alexandre Piankoff. The photographs document the architecture, wall paintings, watercolor reproductions of the wall paintings, manuscripts, the local environment, and the monastery inhabitants.
