History

George Crews McGhee was a Rhodes Scholar and a wealthy oil prospector. During World War II, he became a naval air intelligence officer, and then worked for the state department. He served as Ambassador to Turkey from 1951-1953, later becoming Undersecretary for Political Affairs, and ambassador to West Germany. He helped shape US economic and petroleum ties on a global scale, and wrote several books about his experiences.
