The church was most likely constructed in the late 5th century. Significant restorations occurred around the 7th and 12th centuries, as well as around 1500.

The church building is thought to have existed prior to 1192, the date ascribed to the first cycle of wall paintings. Possibly dated from the middle of the twelfth century. A narthex extension took place in the seventeenth century.

The wall painting of the Virgin on the tympanum of the north door dates to the first half of the fourteenth century. The other paintings appear to be from different periods, most probably dating between the fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries.

The paintings of the apse date to the second half of the twelfth century while the remaining paintings in the interior of the naos are dated precisely in 1192. The paintings in the pendentives and elsewhere were restored in the fourteenth century.
