Scope and content

Photographs document the transfer and conservation of the “Etyemez fresco” (also described as the “Samatya fresco”) near Yedikule in Istanbul, from 1957-1958. The fresco, depicting the Virgin and Christ Child, was discovered in a small apse on a property slated for demolition in the Samatya neighborhood at the corner of Samatya Caddesi and Etyemez Tekke Sokaği. The site was quickly surveyed and the fresco was transferred to a new armature, and relocated to the Hagia Sophia Museum. The work was executed by Byzantine Institute staff Lawrence Majewski, Carroll Wales and Constantine Tsaousis.
