Description

Detailed fieldwork reports from the second season of the Van expedition and correspondence between the Blisses and Lakes. Edited by Bertrand Martin Tipple, Silva Lake’s father, the fieldwork reports list fieldwork staff and detail progress at Van Kaleh, Kalehjik and Tilke Tepe. Developments at Van Kaleh include discovery of a fortified pier (“the Sardurburg”), Chalcolithic and Hittite pottery, and the excavation of a house. At Tilke Tepe, painted pottery parallel to the Tel Halaf ware of Mesopotamia along with obsidian and bone implements were discovered. And at Kalehjik, the fieldworkers excavated an underground cistern. The correspondence explains the cessation of sponsorship from the University of Pennsylvania and new sponsorship by the Semitic Museum at Harvard University.
