Description

Detailed fieldwork reports from the first season of the Van expedition and correspondence between the Blisses and Lakes, including a set of 10 photographs from the expedition sent as a Christmas greeting. Primarily authored by Silva Lake, the fieldwork reports describe initial excavations at Van Kaleh and Kalehjik, along with the finds from each, including: tombs with stelae, walls made out of kerpiç Vannic pottery and inscriptions. The final report outlines the objectives for second season. Folder also includes two key documents most likely used in securing sponsorship for the expedition: “Proposal for a Five Years Plan of Work” and “Memorandum on the Scientific Significance of the Proposed Expedition to Van (Turkey)”. Correspondence includes: details about publication of Quantulacumque by the Waverly Press; a strategic dinner invitation for Turkey’s new ambassador, Münir Ertegün; and plans for a December visit to Dumbarton Oaks to present fieldwork photography and films from the first season.
