History

Edward Russell Ayrton was an English Egyptologist and archaeologist. Born in China to a British consular official, Ayrton was educated at St. Paul's School in London and began to work on excavations at age 20, doing work at Abydos with the Egypt Exploration Fund. He continued to work independently on other excavations in the Valley of the Kings for several years, before drowning in an accident on a shooting expedition in Sri Lanka.
