History
Ercüment Atabay was a professor of humanities at Robert College and Bogazici University. In the 1940s and 1950s, he assisted Robert Van Nice in his survey work at Hagia Sophia, recording approximately 1500 mason's marks from the building. He also assisted Paul Underwood while Underwood was field director of the Byzantine Institute.
