Description and Other Notes

Description

The mosaic of the Virgin and Child was removed from the wall following the Turkish occupation of Cyprus in 1976, when mosaics from the church were looted and sold in the illegal art market. Parts of the mosaics showing the Christ Child and the archangel Michael were returned to Cyprus in 1991. The hand of the Virgin and the right hand of the archangel Michael were returned in 2013 and loose tesserae from the Virgin mosaic in 2015. The mosaics are now housed in the Byzantine Museum of the Archbishop Makarios III Foundation in Nicosia.
