Stout was a consultant conservator for the Byzantine Institute in 1955 at Kariye Camii, under the direction of Paul Underwood. He “examined the paintings in 1955 [and] found certain external evidence that the painting was done on wet plaster” (letter from Rutherford Gettens to Paul Coremans, May 23, 1957).
